Como Escolher o Seu Primeiro Sistema de Hi-Fi

Most people who walk into a hi-fi store for the first time do the same thing: they look around, see the prices, and conclude it's not for them. That instinct is understandable. And it's wrong.

Hi-fi isn't a closed club for enthusiasts with more money than sense. It's simply sound you can really hear — with detail, with space, with life. And it's far more affordable than it looks.

The three-piece system

An entry-level hi-fi system is made up of three elements.

The source is the device that plays the music. It can be a streamer (connected to services like Spotify or Tidal), a turntable, or a CD player. Each has its own character, but they all do the same job: send a signal to the next stage.

The integrated amplifier receives that signal and amplifies it. In a simple system, the amplifier and preamplifier live in the same box — hence "integrated". It's the heart of the system.

The speakers turn the electrical signal into sound. They're what the ear judges first, which is why they deserve special attention when choosing.

That's it. Source, amplifier, speakers. With these three elements and a reasonable budget, the leap from a soundbar or a pair of Bluetooth speakers is immediate and unmistakable.

The room matters as much as the equipment

There's a truth spec sheets can't capture: the same system sounds different depending on the room it's set up in. Size, materials, furniture layout — all of it affects what you hear.

That's why buying hi-fi remotely, guided only by specs on a screen, is a lottery. The specs don't lie, but they don't tell the whole story either. What your ear decides in a listening room is different from what your head decides while reading reviews online.

So, how much does this actually cost?

Putting together a decent entry-level system — speakers, integrated amplifier and a streaming source — is perfectly possible for under €1,000. For anyone wanting to add a turntable or step up the speaker quality slightly, the €1,500–€2,500 range opens up a very different field.

There's no single right number. There's the right number for what each person has at home, in their space, with their listening habits. The advice we give in store always starts from there — from what makes sense for each situation, not from what would cost the most.

Come and listen before you decide

my HI-FI HOUSE has a listening room on Av. 5 de Outubro, in Lisbon, backed by over 40 years in hi-fi and no agenda to push product. You can just come in, tell us what you have at home, what you listen to and how much you want to spend, and we'll put together a system that makes sense — together.

Our best sales pitch is simply switching the equipment on and letting the music speak.
