If you want to give a sound system that works the moment the box is opened, the simplest route is a pair of active speakers, which already have the amplifier built in. The Vulkkano A5 ARC MKII cost €189 and connect to a phone by Bluetooth and to a TV by HDMI ARC. For someone who plays records, the Vulkkano Plus Vinyl System puts a turntable and speakers together for €299. With streaming and CD, the Eversolo System comes to €990.
If you are only after ideas by price tier, we also have the guide Hi-fi Christmas gifts 2026. This article answers a different question, the one asked by someone who wants to hand over a complete system that is ready to play.
Three ways to get a complete system
The first is the all-in-one unit, which combines streamer, amplifier and speakers in a single piece. You plug it in and it plays. The second is a pair of active speakers, where each speaker has its own amplifier and you only need to connect one to the other and to the source. The third is an amplifier with streaming plus passive speakers, which leaves more room to grow later but means buying two or three pieces and the speaker cable.
Anyone receiving vinyl falls into a variant of the last two, because a turntable needs a phono preamp. Some turntables and some active speakers already include one, and in those cases nothing is missing.

Vulkkano A5 ARC MKII, €189
These active speakers are sold as a pair, with 100 W RMS, a silk-dome tweeter and a 5.25" woofer. Inputs include Bluetooth, RCA, optical, USB-C and HDMI ARC, and the remote comes in the box. Little is left to buy, although the page does not mention an HDMI cable, so it is worth checking what the recipient's TV accepts. It is the right choice for a sensible gift, for someone who wants to play music from a phone and improve the TV sound without any building work.
Vulkkano Plus Vinyl System, €299
The system combines the Vulkkano TD10 turntable (€159) and the A5 ARC MKII speakers (€189). Bought separately they would come to €348, and the system costs €299. The turntable has a built-in phono preamp and connects directly to the speakers, which have Bluetooth for a phone and HDMI ARC for a TV. The page says no amplifier or extra cables are needed. It comes in brown and black, and it is the most complete gift we have for someone who has never owned a turntable.
Cambridge Audio L/R S, €499
A pair of active speakers with 2 x 50 W, a 21 mm aluminum tweeter and a 3" woofer. They connect by aptX HD Bluetooth, USB-C to a computer, optical to a TV or RCA, and have a subwoofer output. They come in six colors (the Walnut version costs €549), which makes them easy to give to someone with firm tastes. They are small, so they make more sense on a desk or a shelf than in a large room. You can read more in our guide Cambridge Audio: AX, CX, Evo or L/R.
Tangent System, €590
It brings together the Tangent Ampster BT III amplifier (€199), the iEAST OLIO streaming receiver (€95) and the Acoustic Energy AE100² speakers (€349), which would add up to €643. The Ampster has HDMI ARC, aptX HD Bluetooth and a phono input, and the OLIO adds Wi-Fi with AirPlay 2 and Spotify Connect. It is a system for the living room, with TV, phone, streaming and vinyl all connected to two proper speakers. The page does not mention a speaker cable and it is wise to plan for one.
WiiM Amp Pro with Acoustic Energy AE100², €836 as a sum
This combination is our own sum rather than a store pack, with €487 for the WiiM Amp Pro plus €349 for the AE100². The amplifier delivers 60 W per channel at 8 ohms, has HDMI ARC, AirPlay 2, Chromecast, Spotify Connect and Tidal Connect, and is controlled through the WiiM Home app. The speakers are bookshelf monitors and the page does not say whether the price is per unit or per pair, so we confirm it before closing the sale. Speaker cables are missing. To choose between WiiM models, see WiiM: which one to choose.
Vestlyd M6C Active, €899
Active speakers sold as a pair, with 4 x 75 W in class D, a titanium coaxial tweeter and a 6.5" woofer. They connect to a TV by HDMI eARC, to a phone by Bluetooth and to a computer by USB-C, and have an MM phono input for a turntable. The box includes the remote, the power cable and a 3 m speaker cable. They reach down to 40 Hz and have three sound profiles. They weigh over 16 kg and come in an Oak or black finish.
Eversolo System, €990
The Eversolo Play CD Edition (€790) is a streamer, DAC, amplifier and CD player in a single unit with a screen, and the Acoustic Energy AE100² (€349) complete the system. Bought separately it would be €1,139. The page mentions two speaker cables to connect everything but does not say whether they are included, and it does not describe the connection to a TV or a phone, so we do not promise it. It is a gift for someone who still owns CDs and wants to stream without losing the collection.
Cambridge Audio Evo One, €1,499, to stretch
Streamer, amplifier and speakers in a single piece, with 700 W of class D amplification and 14 drivers. It has an MM phono preamp, HDMI eARC, a 6.8" screen and streaming through Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect, Qobuz, AirPlay 2 and Google Cast. You plug it in and it plays, which makes it the gift that is easiest to set up. It comes in walnut and black. For more options by tier, see Recommended systems by price tier.
What to consider before buying
- Find out whether the recipient has vinyl records or CDs, because that decides between a turntable, a CD player or streaming alone.
- Check which connections the TV has (HDMI ARC or optical) before choosing speakers.
- Think about where the system will sit, because small speakers in a large room disappoint.
- Allow for cables and stands that the product page does not include.
- Remember that part of the catalog arrives by order from the distributor and that lead times stretch close to Christmas.
- Arrange delivery early. Shipping is free in mainland Portugal from €100 and in-store pickup is available at Av. 5 de Outubro, 29, in Lisbon.
Frequently asked questions
What does a sound system need to work straight out of the box?
An all-in-one or a pair of active speakers, because they already have amplification. All you need is a power outlet, a source (phone, TV or a turntable with phono) and, on some models, a cable.
What is the difference between active and passive speakers?
Active speakers have a built-in amplifier and passive ones need a separate amplifier. We explain it in more detail in active or passive speakers.
Can I listen before giving one?
Yes. Our listening room is open Tuesday to Saturday, 11 am to 7 pm, by appointment through WhatsApp.
What if the system is for a small apartment?
It is worth starting with compact speakers such as the L/R S or the A5. There are more suggestions in hi-fi system for a small apartment.
