Quanto custa um bom sistema de alta fidelidade?

It is the most common question from anyone starting out: how much does a good high-fidelity system cost? There is no single number. There are excellent solutions for very different budgets. What really makes the difference is not the total amount but how the investment is distributed across the components.

Where do hi-fi system prices start?

A complete and truly satisfying high-fidelity system typically starts in the range of a few thousand euros for the set (speakers, amplification and source). Below that there are respectable entry-level options; above it, the range is practically unlimited. The important thing is to set a realistic budget for the whole set, rather than buying pieces at random.

How should I split the budget across the components?

A useful rule of thumb as a starting point: about half the budget on speakers + amplification, which are the heart of the sound, and the other half split between source (streamer, DAC or turntable), cables and some attention to the room acoustics. It is not a rigid formula, but it avoids the classic mistake of spending everything on one piece and leaving the rest to limit the result.

Where is it really worth investing?

In the speakers, first. They are what you hear most. Then in amplification that matches the speakers. Digital sources have evolved a great deal and today deliver excellent quality without costing a fortune. With cables, quality yes, excess no: the returns are diminishing.

Is it better to buy everything at once or in stages?

Both approaches work. Buying the set all at once ensures everything is balanced from the start. Buying in stages lets you spread the investment and evolve at your own pace, one of the advantages of systems built from separate components. What we recommend is planning the final destination from the beginning, so that each purchase makes sense within the whole.

Is it worth spending more?

Up to a point, more investment brings clear gains in quality. Beyond a certain level, diminishing returns set in: you pay a lot for subtle improvements, which make sense for demanding audiophiles but not always for those who simply want great sound. Knowing where to stop is part of good advice.

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum budget to start well?

It depends, but with a well-chosen set you can get a very good result without going to extremes. The secret lies in a balanced choice, not in maximum spending.

Does a more expensive system always sound better?

Not always. A well-balanced, well-installed system can sound better than a more expensive one that is poorly matched to the room.

Can you help me put together a system within my budget?

Yes. At my HI-FI HOUSE, in Lisbon, we help you distribute the budget and listen to the options in the listening room before deciding, for any level of investment.
