HOLO AUDIO – MAY DAC (R2R – DSD1024)

The MAY DAC has arrived! Over 3 years in the making and tremendous R&D to reach a new level of performance and sound quality that sets a new standard. Natural analog sound without compromise, with the best measurements of any NOS R2R DAC. The MAY is a DUAL mono DAC, so there is a dedicated DAC module for the left channel and a dedicated DAC module for the right channel. In addition, each channel is individually powered by its dedicated Otype FLATWIRE transformer, found in all three models.

SOME NOTED FEATURES

The May DAC (all three models) will also support DSD1024 native and PCM 1.536MHz output! Theoretically it can do DSD2048 and PCM 3.072Mhz, however it is untested at this time. Also, we have worked hard to reduce the common click noise with all DACs when switching from DSD to PCM. This click sound has been reduced significantly with a special circuit design. The May DAC has the new and exclusive USB Enhanced module which has our FPGA with the new Titanis 2.0 and custom firmware to improve USB Eye Pattern, reduce latency to near zero and reduce jitter to very, very low levels. The USB module has completely new code written to optimize performance and reduce latency significantly. Low frequency performance (-40db) is also improved. The enhanced USB module has two XMOS xu208 chips instead of the one used in the Spring2.

New improved power supply circuit with high-performance multi-stage regulation circuit using Rubycon ZLH caps, Panasonic FC, Vishay caps, or (L2/KTE models) our exclusive HoloAudio-branded caps (the KTE model uses unique custom proprietary caps to replace Vishay caps).

We are no longer using a common LVDS chipset and are now using a custom 4-way circuit that isolates each line, which further improves sound quality; for example the MCLK is isolated from the data line and this improves jitter spec. Also there are TWO i2s ports in the May DAC. Each one can be individually configured (pin-outs) to support all i2s products on the market.

The May and KTE version of the May DAC also comes with a CNC-machined aluminium remote control! Standard with all three models.

The KTE version has OCC copper wire replaced with 1.5mm pure silver wire. The 1.5mm silver wire is soldered direct to the PCBs with the highest-grade audio solder. Silver Rhodium Faston connectors are used at the IEC input.

The May is a DUAL mono DAC, so there is a dedicated DAC module for the left channel and a dedicated DAC module for the right channel. Also each channel is individually powered by its dedicated Otype FLATWIRE transformer found in all three models. After careful testing we have found this new transformer type outperforms ALL transformers we have ever tested to date. Near-zero leakage, improved dynamics and overall spectacular performance. They are handmade for this DAC specifically and deliver the world-class performance you would expect.

The May DAC also has a new screen on the front that appears the same as the Spring2 at first glance. Font size is bigger than the Spring2 but smaller than the Spring1. Also, CD track-time information is displayed when using SPDIF inputs! This is done by extracting additional data from SPDIF. This is a part of the CD red book standard but nobody notices it and it is often forgotten. The screen has much better contrast and viewing angles and is one of the first things one may notice.

The May also has a front power button now! It has been requested by many customers, and gone are the days of a reach-around to turn the DAC on. As mentioned above, the DAC has a soft-start circuit, so it takes a moment to charge up and pull power without blowing the fuse. It actually uses the same value of fuse that our Spring1 and Spring2 have, but with two transformers! Without a soft start a couple of issues can happen, one being a blown fuse from power surge and another simply possible pop noises. We have carefully designed the circuit to be a zero-compromise design.

Volume Control has NOT been implemented (on purpose!). A preamp is designed to do things such as increasing the gain, lowering the output impedance, or converting from unbalanced to balanced. If your device has an output impedance too close to the input impedance of the device you are connecting it to, your signal may be too weak, and that weakness results in a degraded analogue output. DACs offering volume control mostly do not have an integrated preamp, and at this quality level there is no question of integrating degradation into the DAC.
