Buying used hi-fi can be worthwhile when you find well-cared-for equipment at a fair price, but it comes with real risks, such as no warranty or worn components: the safer alternative is to look for "Opportunities" units with a warranty, like the ones we have available at my HI-FI HOUSE.
The advantages of second-hand hi-fi
The used hi-fi market is large and, in many cases, genuinely interesting. Quality amplifiers, speakers and players tend to last decades if well cared for, which means equipment that's a few years old can still sound very good and cost a fraction of the price when new. It's also a way to access brands or models that are no longer in production and would otherwise be hard to find new.
For many enthusiasts this is actually the natural way to start or grow a system: buying one part of the system second-hand from a trustworthy source while saving up for another new piece, building the set up in stages.
The risks you need to know
That said, buying used from private sellers or online platforms has pitfalls worth knowing before you go ahead:
- There's usually no warranty, or only a very limited one
- Components such as turntable styli, valves or capacitors can be worn without visible signs
- There's no advice on whether that equipment suits the rest of your system
- Discontinued models can have replacement parts that are hard to find
- You can't test the equipment calmly before buying it
What to check before buying used
If you still decide to buy from a private seller, there are a few points you should always confirm:
- The real condition of use and any repairs already made
- Whether the equipment turns on and works without strange noises, tested live whenever possible
- Whether the original box, manual and accessories are included
- Whether the model still has parts and servicing available in Portugal
- Whether the asking price matches the real market value for the equipment's condition
