Colunas de chão DALI Sonik 7 em carvalho natural

The best floorstanding speakers under €3,000 for most rooms are the DALI Sonik 7 (€1,498 a pair), which pair a hybrid tweeter with a planar magnetostatic element and two 7-inch woofers at a price that leaves money for the amplifier. If your budget is tighter, the Acoustic Energy AE109² (€799) is a very honest entry point. If you want to reach the top of this range, listen to the Spendor A2.2 (€2,490). We picked seven models we stock, from the most affordable to the most expensive.

Why we chose each model

Acoustic Energy AE109² (€799)

This is the cheapest way into our selection. At 80 cm tall, with 89 dB sensitivity and a 4 ohm impedance, it wants an amplifier with some current and suits a small room. It comes in black or walnut and works well for anyone moving up from stand-mounts to something with more bass without spending much.

DALI Sonik 5 (€998)

Two 5¼-inch woofers and a 29 mm wideband tweeter in a slim cabinet, with a 39 Hz to 26 kHz response and 88 dB sensitivity. The 6 ohm impedance makes life easier for more modest amplifiers. It is available in black, natural oak, walnut and white.

DALI Sonik 7 (€1,498)

Our central recommendation. The treble module pairs a 17 x 45 mm planar magnetostatic tweeter with a 29 mm soft dome and extends the response to 30 kHz, with detailed highs that never tire. The two 7-inch woofers reach down to 36 Hz. The 6 ohm impedance lets it play well with amplifiers from 30 W upward.

DALI Opticon 6 MK2 (€2,100)

It combines a 29 mm dome with a 17 x 45 mm ribbon, two 6½-inch mid-woofers and Dual Flare reflex ports. The response runs from 49 Hz to 30 kHz and DALI recommends amplifiers from 25 to 200 W. At 4 ohms, it calls for an integrated with plenty of current in reserve.

Acoustic Energy AE320² (€2,200)

One metre tall, with 90 dB sensitivity and a 35 Hz to 30 kHz response, it is among the easiest speakers on this list to drive. The 8 ohm impedance makes it compatible with practically any amplifier, including lower-powered tube designs.

DALI Sonik 9 (€2,398)

The top of the Sonik series, with three 7-inch woofers and a 34 Hz to 30 kHz response. Sensitivity is 90 dB and DALI recommends amplifiers from 50 to 300 W, which makes it the pick for large rooms where you listen loud. The 4 ohm load calls for a robust integrated.

Spendor A2.2 (€2,490)

Spendor brings the musicality of the A1.2 to a floorstander, with more bass extension and a height of just 79 cm. It is easy to place in any room and delivers a lively, expressive sound well beyond what its size suggests. It is the one we recommend to anyone who mostly listens to voices, strings and acoustic music.

What to consider before buying

  • The room matters as much as the speaker. In small rooms a more compact speaker sounds better balanced. Room acoustics can do more for you than moving up a model.
  • Check each speaker's impedance and recommended power before choosing an amplifier. The 4 ohm models need more current.
  • Keep the speakers away from the back wall, ideally 20 to 50 cm, so the bass does not become heavy.
  • If you are still torn between this format and smaller speakers, our guide to bookshelf or floorstanding speakers will help you decide.

Is it worth raising your budget?

If you can go past €3,000, the Spendor A4.2 (€3,790) use an 18 cm Spendor driver on a slim chassis and fill the room with projection and personality well beyond what the size would lead you to expect. You will notice it most in medium and large rooms. You can see the whole range in the floorstanding speakers collection.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best floorstanding speaker under €3,000?

For most rooms, the DALI Sonik 7 (€1,498). If the room is large and you listen loud, the DALI Sonik 9 (€2,398) gives you more scale. If you mostly listen to acoustic music, we suggest the Spendor A2.2 (€2,490).

Is the price for the pair or for each speaker?

For the DALI Sonik, the product page states the price is for the pair. For the other models, please confirm with us before buying, by phone or in our listening room.

Do I need a subwoofer with floorstanding speakers?

In most rooms, no. The models on this list with published response figures reach down to around 50 Hz or lower, which is enough bass for music.

Which amplifier should I use?

An integrated amplifier with 50 to 100 W per channel suits these speakers well. If you do not have one yet, see our selection of integrated amplifiers.
