QLN is a Swedish brand of hand-built high-fidelity loudspeakers, recognised for the "truncated pyramid" design it introduced back in the 1980s and which still defines its identity today. At my HI-FI HOUSE it represents the Scandinavian school of acoustic engineering: proprietary solutions in material and cabinet geometry, all in service of a single goal — reproducing the soundstage with naturalness.
An idea about the soundstage, since 1977
QLN was born in Sweden in 1977, out of a simple question that still guides the brand today: how should a loudspeaker be designed to reproduce the soundstage with maximum fidelity? The answer arrived in 1981, when QLN unveiled the One at CES, the world's first monitor loudspeaker with the brand's signature "truncated pyramid" cabinet and sloped front baffle — a geometry designed to time-align the woofer and tweeter and reduce internal standing waves, not merely an aesthetic flourish. Four decades on, that shape remains the visual signature of the entire QLN range. Since the early 1980s the brand has maintained a presence in markets across Europe, North America and the Far East.
The QLN sound philosophy
Every QLN loudspeaker is built by hand in Sweden, using a cabinet material developed in-house, Qboard®, chosen for its damping properties over conventional particleboard. The combination of truncated-pyramid cabinet, sloped baffle and Qboard® always pursues the same goal: minimising cabinet coloration and time misalignment between drivers, so that what reaches the listener's ears comes as close as possible to the moment of recording. It is a quiet, unshowy kind of engineering, built over decades of successive refinements rather than constant reinvention.

Why we chose QLN
We chose QLN because it is one of the rare loudspeaker brands that still builds everything by hand in Sweden, with a design language that copied no one and that solves, through proprietary geometry and materials, real problems of time alignment and cabinet coloration. It is a coherent range from top to bottom, from the Prestige 1 to the Reference 9, which makes it easy for a customer to grow within the brand without switching sound philosophy along the way.
Frequently asked questions
What makes QLN's "truncated pyramid" design different from a conventional loudspeaker?
The sloped front baffle and the non-parallel cabinet shape help time-align the drivers and reduce internal reflections, a solution QLN introduced in 1981 and still maintains, updated, across its current range.
What is the difference between QLN's standmount and floorstanding loudspeakers?
Standmount models, such as the Prestige 1 or the One, call for a dedicated stand and suit a smaller or moderate-sized room; floorstanding loudspeakers, such as the Prestige 3 and Prestige 5, need no stand and deliver more bass and scale in larger rooms. See our guide on the topic to decide with more confidence.
What is the Qboard® used in QLN cabinets?
It is a cabinet construction material developed in-house by QLN, used in multiple layers in models such as the Prestige 5 Gen 2, chosen for its acoustic damping properties.
